No. Instagram sends no notification when you delete a comment, either your own on someone else's post or someone else's on your post. The comment simply disappears for everyone. The catch is timing: the post owner may already have seen the original alert or the comment itself. Since April 2026 you can also edit a comment for 15 minutes, which leaves a visible Edited tag.

Deleting is silent. Staying unseen is a different matter, and it depends on how fast you were.

What happens when you delete your own comment?

Your comment disappears from the post for everyone, and Instagram tells nobody. The post owner gets no alert, other commenters get nothing, and anyone tagged in the comment is not informed. Your profile carries no trace of it either.

Deleting takes a few seconds: swipe left on the comment on iPhone, or press and hold it on Android, then tap the bin. Deleted comments do not go to Recently Deleted, which holds posts, reels and stories, so there is no undo.

Can the post owner still see a comment you deleted?

Only if they saw it before it was gone. A comment on someone's post normally triggers a notification, and that alert can land on their phone within seconds. Once you delete the comment, the entry in their activity feed is reported to disappear, but a push already shown on a lock screen cannot be pulled back.

So the risk is a window, not a record. A comment deleted within a few seconds, on a post from someone who mutes notifications, has a fair chance of never being read. A comment left up for an hour on a friend's fresh post has almost certainly reached them.

Does someone know if you delete their comment on your post?

No. As the post owner you can delete any comment on your own post, and the person who wrote it gets no notification. They find out only if they come back to the post and notice the comment is missing, and nothing tells them who removed it or why.

If deleting feels too pointed, Instagram has quieter tools. Restricting someone hides their future comments from everyone but them unless you approve each one, and the difference between restricting, muting and blocking is laid out in blocked vs restricted vs muted. Comment controls can also limit who may comment at all.

Pinning works the other way. Pinning a comment to the top of your post is reported to notify the person who wrote it, so of all the moderation tools on a post, pin is the one that speaks up.

Should you edit or delete an Instagram comment?

Edit a typo, delete a mistake. Instagram added comment editing in April 2026: for 15 minutes after posting you can change the text, and the comment then shows a small grey Edited tag. Only the words can change, not an attached photo, and nobody sees the earlier version.

The tag is the trade-off. A deleted comment leaves no trace on the post, while an edited one announces a change. Messages work the same way, with the same 15-minute window, as explained in editing an Instagram message.

How do you delete old Instagram comments in bulk?

Open Your Activity from your profile menu, then Interactions, then Comments, tap Select and tick as many as you like. The list sorts newest or oldest first and filters by a start and end date, so years of old remarks can go in a few minutes. The rest of that screen gets its own walkthrough in Instagram Your Activity history.

A bulk delete is just as silent as a single one. Nobody is told that dozens of your comments vanished at once, though a regular on those posts might eventually notice the gaps.

Where does a deleted comment still exist?

Outside Instagram, it can live on. A screenshot keeps it forever, and Instagram sends no alert when someone screenshots a comment. Other comments that quoted you or mentioned your handle are separate comments, so they stay up after yours is gone and answer a remark nobody can see.

Comments are also louder than likes from the start, a point made in who can see what you like. A like is a name in a list. A comment is public text, which is why a quick delete matters more.

The StalkView profile viewer opens public Instagram profiles with no account, so there is no like, comment or view to undo later.

Common questions

Does the post owner get notified when you delete a comment?

No. Instagram sends no alert when someone deletes a comment. The owner may still have seen the original comment notification if it arrived before you deleted it, because a push already shown on a phone stays there.

Can you recover a deleted Instagram comment?

No. Deleted comments do not go to Recently Deleted, which only holds posts, reels and stories. Once you remove a comment it is gone, so copy the text first if you might want it again.

Does someone know if I delete their comment on my post?

No notification is sent. The person who wrote the comment learns it is gone only by returning to the post and noticing it is missing, and Instagram does not say who removed it.

Can you edit a comment on Instagram?

Yes, since April 2026. You have 15 minutes after posting to change the text, and the comment then shows a small grey Edited tag. An attached photo stays as posted.

Does Instagram notice if I delete many comments at once?

Nobody else is told. Deleting dozens of comments from Your Activity sends no alert to any post owner, though people who often read those posts may eventually notice that your comments are gone.
