Mostly no. A trial reel goes to people who do not follow you, and it stays out of your followers' Feed and Reels tab and off your profile grid. It is not hidden, though. A follower can still meet it if someone sends it in a DM, or on the page for its audio, location or filter. Instagram launched the feature on December 10, 2024.
Trial reels are a testing tool, not a privacy setting. Treating them as private is the most common mistake people make with them.
What is a trial reel on Instagram?
Trials are reels Instagram shows to non-followers first, so you can see how strangers react before your own audience sees it. You turn the Trial switch on, on the final sharing screen, before you tap Share. The reel then goes out through recommendations to people who do not follow you.
The point is a cleaner test. Followers tend to like whatever you post, which makes their reaction a poor signal. Strangers scroll past anything that does not hold them, so their numbers say more about the reel itself.
Can your followers see a trial reel?
Not in the usual places. Instagram's creator blog says followers will not see one in Feed or in the Reels tab, and it will not appear in your profile's reels tab or main grid. For someone who only follows you and watches your profile, the trial effectively does not exist.
The same goes for tools that read a profile from the outside. A viewer that lists a public profile's posts and reels shows what is on the grid, so a trial normally stays off that list until you share it with everyone.
Where can followers still find a trial reel?
Instagram names the exits itself. A follower can still reach the reel in three ways:
- Direct messages. Any non-follower who sees the reel can forward it, and nothing stops them sending it to someone who follows you.
- Audio pages. Tapping a sound shows other reels that use it, and a trial can appear there.
- Location and filter pages. The same applies to a tagged place or an effect used in the reel.
Shared audio is a separate leak worth knowing about: your sound can travel without the video, as explained in who can remix your reels.
What happens to a trial reel after 72 hours?
Instagram uses the first 72 hours to judge the reel. Before posting you can opt in to automatic sharing, and if the trial performs well on views in that window, Instagram shares it with your followers for you. Otherwise it stays a trial until you decide.
About 24 hours after posting, the reel shows views, likes, comments and shares, plus a comparison with your earlier trials. If the numbers look good, tap Share to everyone. The reel then lands on your grid and reaches followers like any other reel.
The test is most useful when you compare two versions. Post the safe cut as a normal reel and the experiment as a trial, then read both after a day. A weak trial costs nothing with your followers, because they never saw it. A strong one goes out with numbers already behind it.
Who can post trial reels?
Trial reels started with professional accounts in December 2024 and were widened later, but the follower thresholds reported since differ between sources. The reliable check is in the app: if the Trial switch appears on the reel's sharing screen, your account qualifies.
The account has to be public. A trial works only by reaching strangers, and a private account shows nothing to strangers. How the public and private split works generally is covered in public vs private Instagram.
Is a trial reel private?
No, and the word trial hides that. To strangers the reel is fully public: they can like it, comment, save it, share it and screen record it. The only people it avoids by default are the ones who already follow you.
That makes it closer to an unlisted video than a private one. Use trials for a new format or a riskier idea. Do not use them for anything you would be uncomfortable seeing forwarded to your followers, because one DM is enough.

The StalkView reels viewer loads the public reels of any open profile with no login, the same view a non-follower gets.
Common questions
Do followers get notified about a trial reel?
No. Instagram keeps a trial out of followers' Feed and Reels tab, so they get no new-post signal. They see it only if it reaches them another way, such as a DM or an audio page.
Does a trial reel show on my profile?
No, not while it is a trial. It stays off your profile grid and your reels tab. Once you choose Share to everyone, the reel appears on your profile like a normal reel.
How long does an Instagram trial last?
Instagram judges the trial on views in its first 72 hours, and early metrics appear after about 24 hours. If you opted in, a strong trial is shared with followers automatically after that period.
Can a private account post trial reels?
No. A trial only works by reaching people who do not follow you, and a private account shows nothing to non-followers. The Trial switch appears only on eligible public accounts.
Can non-followers share my trial reel?
Yes. Non-followers who see a trial can like, comment, save and send it in a DM, and that DM can reach one of your followers. A trial reel is public, just not shown to followers by default.
